A favicon, short for 'favorites icon', is often referred to as a website icon, a url icon or a page icon. Think of it as the identity to your website. Most companies use their logo or a part of their logo to be displayed as their favicon.

A favicon appears to the left of your url address in the address bar as the screenshot above shows. It also appears to the left of your Page title in a tab, just as shown below.

A favicon is how many people will remember your website. If your website is bookmarked (added to the favorites folder), your favicon will appear every time the visitors view the links. This also applies when saving your website url as a shortcut on the desktop.

If your logo has extreme detail with pictures, text and color - taking it down to a file the size of 16 pixels by 16 pixels limits the detail you can see. For this reason, we recommend you go with a more simple or basic version of your logo, say with your corporate colors along with initials or your corporate colors with a simple graphic.
